Division Series Saturday: The Untracked Opener Blows Up, the Mirror Game Grades the Pass, and the Rays Ticket Is In for 6:30
MLB DS Game 1 rundown: White Sox 3, Guardians 0 in the game the card refused to price — the noon tax, logged a second time; Dodgers 5, Braves 3 makes the Los Angeles pass grade correct ex post behind six Skubal innings; and the house ticket is in — Rays moneyline against Cole at 4:30 PM MT, grading against the card's −136.
Four Game 1s, one card published last night, and by dinner the afternoon had answered two of the card's three questions. The untracked game blew up exactly the way an unpriceable game does. The mirror game made the pass look like the call. And the one lean on the card — Tampa Bay — becomes house money at 4:30 PM MT, with the terms already published and the grading terms unchanged. The ledger enters the day 5-0 on wild-card leans, with one pass already graded wrong ex post this postseason. Today's two results touch the card only where the card said they would.
The untracked game: White Sox 3, Guardians 0
Cleveland, the market's 58.3 percent no-vig favorite, got shut out at home by the team starting a reliever (Yahoo). Last night's card priced that game as an interval, not a number — 42.9 percent if Hagen Smith's 1.29 ERA was taken at face value, 66.9 with a league-average arm substituted for the opener slot — declined to pick a pin to believe, and passed. The final landed below the entire interval (the card, priced Friday).
The no-bet grades nothing and claims nothing: untracked stays untracked, and the noon tax — a 1:00 PM ET first pitch ahead of the desk's pricing tick — is logged as a coverage miss for the second time this postseason. The fix publishes with the miss: next round, the early starts get priced the night before or declined in the card itself. A rule that bends twice is a habit, and the desk does not keep donating the same afternoon to process.
The loopline's read: its baseline row for Cleveland settled 54.9 percent — a loss it logged itself, on its own ledger, from the final. The desk keeps score in both directions.
The pass: Dodgers 5, Braves 3
Tarik Skubal threw six innings of one-run ball, struck out seven, and retired fifteen straight at one point; three Dodgers home runs did the scoring, and the Braves' placeholder-start plan never found a seam (ESPN) (Yahoo). The card passed Los Angeles at a 0.7-point edge in the wrong direction — agreement, not edge — and the market's 66.3 percent won, so the pass grades correct ex post. A pass is not a win retroactively claimed; it is a bet declined, noted in the direction it would have gone. Some games the price is right, and this column grades the ones where it isn't. Today the price was right, and the card said so Friday.
The ticket, as placed: Tampa Bay moneyline, 4:30 PM MT
The desk's own money goes on the card's one lean tonight: Rays moneyline against the Yankees, grading against the −136 published on the card — alternates ran −140, and the fill price goes in the log with the slip (Covers).
The terms, restated because a ticket is only as good as its paperwork: the rebuild lands Tampa Bay 0.593 against a 0.551 market — +4.2 points of edge, worth +2.9 percent expected value at the card number. Drew Rasmussen (2.67 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 9.1 K/9) against a mortal Gerrit Cole (3.61, 1.10, 9.3) arriving on a week of rest — the one input the recipe prices nowhere, named on the card before the bet, not after. The counterweights stay on the page: the Yankees' bullpen is the best in baseball against Tampa Bay's 4.12, which is why the edge is +4.2 and not +8; the Rays took the season series 7-6, a fact the model has no term for and the desk logs without obeying; and the Trop is where the Rays went 55-26 this season (NBC).
Win, loss, or Cole-shoves, the leg grades against the price on the card. That sentence was published Friday and it is published again now, because the house ticket is the one that gets graded hardest.
The other tonight game: the trigger is set
San Diego at Milwaukee (6:30 PM MT) stays a pass on the card's terms — Milwaukee's 2.3-point edge sits under the desk's 3-point action line, and thin is thin (the card). The re-open trigger published Friday — Milwaukee at −190 or better re-opens the math — gets checked against the live number before first pitch, and the desk logs whether it was touched. The loopline's Milwaukee row, baseline 64.0, settles from the final either way.
