Wild Card Tuesday: Four Game 1s, Two Leans, and a Price Check Before Anything Goes on the Card

The desk's model priced three of the four wild-card openers before the odds feed died — White Sox at Astros, Red Sox at Yankees, Cubs at Padres, with a live price check on what survived.

The postseason opens with the four Game 1s the bracket promised on Sunday: White Sox at Astros, Red Sox at Yankees, Phillies at Braves, Cubs at Padres, every game a best-of-three (ESPN) (NBC). The desk's model got to three of them before the market scrape failed. What it found, and what survived a live price check, is below.

The board

* Caveat in bold: today's PRO•LINE scrape failed on a degraded tick, so the market column is yesterday morning's board, not live. If the current price in the app has the Yankees shorter than ~2.05 decimal or the Padres shorter than ~2.20, both leans come off.

The live price check

Checked this afternoon against live books (TheSpread) (USA Today): the Yankees are still −136 on the opener, which holds the ledger edge at roughly +5% against a 55.2% no-vig market. The Padres have firmed to −125, which thins the ledger edge to about +2.7% — under the desk's 3% action line, so the Padres leg is a lean at live prices even though it graded +3.9% on yesterday's number.

An independent hand-rebuild of the model's factor stack on the pulled probables lands higher on both home sides (NYY 65.5%, SD 62.0%), which confirms the direction of the ledger leans without changing the discipline: the canonical numbers are the ledger's, and the ledger says lean, not lock.

The settled one

Philadelphia at Atlanta went untracked — a noon start that preceded the desk's pricing tick — and it is the one result the ledger will carry as a miss rather than paper over. Final: Braves 5, Phillies 3, Austin Riley's three-run homer off Jhoan Duran in the eighth deciding it, Chris Sale with 6.1 innings of three-run ball against Jesús Luzardo's five strong (box). The market's 1.78 favorite on Atlanta (theScore) finished the job.

The pass, and why it holds

White Sox at Astros graded HOU 0.512 against a 0.521 market — a −0.9% pass — and the pass is robust to the one piece of news the board produced: Houston scratched its listed starter and went with AJ Blubaugh against Hagen Smith. A pass does not care who takes the mound. The one thing worth carrying forward from this game is the reminder that announced probables are fragile today; both evening leans assume the listed starters actually throw.

The card, if the prices hold

Two-leg moneyline parlay — Yankees + Padres. At live prices (−136 / −125) it pays about 3.12 decimal (+212), implied 32.0%; the ledger's joint probability is 0.601 × 0.560 = 33.7%, an expected value of roughly +5%. At yesterday's stale PRO•LINE numbers the same ticket pays 4.95 — do not count on a price the feed can't confirm. The season's own calibration block says edges of 3–5% have been worth +18.4% ROI across 817 resolved bets, which is the case for playing it small; the stale-price caveat and an injury report the model can't read are the case for not playing it bigger.

Stated plainly, the risks against the card: Aaron Judge (calf) and Willson Contreras (hand) are out, and the model is injury-blind — both absences push toward Boston. The Yankees line has already drifted from −148 to −136 with the public on New York, money toward Boston. And a rookie left-hander making his first playoff start is a different animal than his season line. The desk's read is on the numbers, and the numbers say this is a lean-sized ticket.

Desk notes

  • Today's PRO•LINE scrape failed (degraded tick). The three evening games sit in the ledger with model probabilities but no market columns until a successful scrape.
  • No Hyperliquid outcome markets for these games — the board is NFL-only right now.
  • Phillies–Braves went untracked (started before the pricing tick); logged as a coverage miss.

Prices verified against live listings where noted; PRO•LINE column is yesterday morning's board and must be re-checked in the app before anything goes on the card.
