CFL Week 9 Weekend Preview

July 30 – August 1, 2026

Week 9 opens Thursday in Winnipeg and rolls through a rare Saturday doubleheader. The model has a pick on every side, with the biggest edges sitting on the under and a couple of road teams getting too many points.

Thursday — BC Lions @ Winnipeg Blue Bombers

  • Kickoff: 6:30 PM MT
  • Spread: Winnipeg -7.5
  • Total: 53.5
  • Model: Winnipeg 29.2 – 23.1 BC

Winnipeg is the right side on both spread and moneyline, but the cleaner model read is the under. The total has been pushed to 53.5 while the model lands at 52.3, and Winnipeg's defence has been tightening since the bye. BC's offence can score in bursts, but it has not shown it can keep pace on the road against the Bombers' front.

Friday — Montreal Alouettes @ Ottawa Redblacks

  • Kickoff: 5:30 PM MT
  • Spread: Montreal -7.0
  • Total: 61.5
  • Model: Ottawa 25.7 – 24.3 Montreal

This is the biggest mismatch between price and projection on the board. The model likes Ottawa plus the touchdown at home, and the total is six points clear of the model's 50.0 expectation. Ottawa has been competitive at TD Place, and Montreal has not consistently covered inflated road numbers this season.

Saturday — Calgary Stampeders @ Hamilton Tiger-Cats

  • Kickoff: 1:00 PM MT
  • Spread: Calgary -5.0
  • Total: 60.5
  • Model: Calgary 27.8 – 25.6 Hamilton

Calgary is the model's straight pick, but the spread is right at the model's number. The under is the edge play — the model sees 53.4 against a market total of 60.5. Hamilton's offence has been one-dimensional, and Calgary's defence has been better than its record suggests.

Saturday — Saskatchewan Roughriders @ Edmonton Elks

  • Kickoff: 5:00 PM MT
  • Spread: Saskatchewan -1.0
  • Total: 59.5
  • Model: Saskatchewan 25.3 – 22.6 Edmonton

The market has this as a coin flip with Saskatchewan a slight road favourite. The model agrees on the side but sees more value on the under, projecting 47.9 against a 59.5 total. Both offences have been inconsistent, and Commonwealth Stadium has played lower-scoring than expected this year.

Weekend Themes

  • Under is the model's favourite angle. All four games project below the market total by at least a field goal.
  • Road dogs are live. Ottawa and Saskatchewan both project closer to pick'em than the spread implies.
  • Favourites are priced aggressively. Winnipeg, Montreal and Calgary are all laying a touchdown or more; only Calgary projects to cover.
