NFL Thursday: Week 4 — Two Tickets Down on Paper, a Pool Still Holding Its Pencil, and Tonight's Game Belongs to Somebody Else
Week 4 Thursday: the desk's picks are published — Baltimore (~84.0%, Silver Bullet) and Minnesota (~82.7%, ESPN entry) — but the pool page shows zero Week-4 picks filed, Baltimore sits burned on less than 1% of its alive field, and tonight's Steelers–Browns game touches 1.2% of America and none of our tickets. Tripwires restated, the operational note repeated in public.
The Week 4 brief is a day old and the first game kicks tonight, which means the week stops being a document and starts being a scoreboard. One disclaimer before the kickoff grid: nothing tonight is ours. The desk's two tickets both play Sunday, the pool we ride has filed exactly zero Week-4 picks as of this morning, and the only live football on the calendar decides the fate of 1.2% of America's entries and 0% of our portfolio. That is not a complaint. After three weeks of this season, a Thursday where the desk has no stake is what the process is supposed to feel like.
The desk's card, restated
| Ticket | Pick | Line | Win % | Kickoff |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silver Bullet | BAL vs TEN | −11.5 | ~84.0 | Sun 1:00 PM ET |
| ESPN entry | MIN vs MIA | −10.5 | ~82.7 | Sun 4:05 PM ET |
| Second Chance | none — pool starts Week 5 | — | — | — |
Both numbers held overnight. Baltimore is −11.5 with a −700 moneyline, de-vigged to roughly 84.0% (ESPN); Minnesota is −10.5 at −625, worth about 82.7% with the vig stripped, and FPI agrees with both at 84 and 83 (ESPN). Nationally the crowd has not blinked either: Yahoo's live distribution is unchanged from Wednesday morning, 45.08 on the Ravens and 39.73 on the Vikings — a combined 84.81% of the country's filed picks on the same two buses we published (Yahoo). Both games kick after 1:00 PM ET Sunday, which means neither bus gets re-priced by the other bus crashing. The card is the card.
The pool this morning: 143 alive, zero filed, chalk fresh
The Classic III results page read correctly this time — whole history, every column, no exceptions — and it says the following. The pool started 326 deep and stands roughly 143 alive entering Week 4. The current-round column is empty across the entire pool: not one entry has filed a Week-4 pick as of Thursday morning. The casual money files Saturday. So does ours, and the operational note gets repeated in public because it has teeth: the Bullet's cell, which displayed a Kansas City placeholder Wednesday, is empty today. Baltimore is not entered. It goes in by hand before Sunday, the save gets verified against this site's documented pick-entry bugs, and the verification gets logged. A technicality does not enter our pick for us twice.
The burn board is the number worth printing. Among the confirmed-alive entries, the teams already spent read:
| Team | Burned, % of alive |
|---|---|
| SF | 73.3 |
| KC | 55.7 |
| PHI | 19.1 |
| BUF | 17.6 |
| DET | 16.0 |
| GB | 0.8 |
| BAL | 0.8 |
| MIN | 0.0 |
Read the bottom two lines again. The pool put Baltimore on 36 entries back in Week 2 — and every one of them died with the Ravens in the Saints loss, which is the only reason the chalk is available to the entire field this week. The Wednesday brief predicted this pool would run at or past Yahoo's 84.81% combined on the two buses, and it made that prediction before a single entry filed. This morning's page confirms the structure: there is nowhere else for 143 survivors to sit. When the distribution reveals Saturday, the board check publishes it.
Tonight: somebody else's funeral, with our ghost in attendance
Steelers at Browns, 8:15 PM ET in Cleveland. Pittsburgh −2.5, moneyline −148, total 38.5 — the week's lowest, down from an opener of 40.5 — and FPI gives the Steelers 55% on a 1.4-point margin (ESPN). Yahoo's crowd has 1.05% on Pittsburgh and 0.15% on Cleveland. One game, 1.2% of the country's tickets, and not a dollar of ours.
The desk will be watching anyway, for one reason. Cleveland is the team that ended the Classic III entry in Week 2 — the 23-19 that turned a published thesis into a graded loss. Whether the Browns win or lose tonight changes nothing about our week; the brief said it plain, and it bears repeating in the game-day post: some buses you only have to see crash once.
The third ticket, by the way
Second Chance Survivor — the Week-5-start replacement for the Classic III leg — sat at 22 paid entries Monday. This morning it reads 52, with entries open until 1:00 PM ET Sunday, October 11 and every pick editable until that lock. Fifty-two $20 seats against a guaranteed $6,000 is still overlay arithmetic: the prize pool is paying roughly $115 of expected value per $20 ticket before anyone kicks a ball. The first Second Chance pick publishes with the Week 5 brief on Wednesday, October 7.
Tripwires, restated so Sunday's grading has something to cite
- Baltimore (Bullet): Titans–Ravens re-prices below −9, or the no-vig number sags under 0.80, by Saturday 6:00 PM MT on verified news — the budget re-runs Sunday morning and the fallback is Minnesota, with the doubling published as a deviation.
- Minnesota (ESPN entry): Miami's quarterback picture upgrades to a named, verified starter, or the Vikings lose their own, or the line collapses back through −7.5 by Sunday 10:00 AM MT — the entry switches to Baltimore, disclosed the same way.
- The pool read: if the revealed Baltimore stack passes roughly half the pool by Saturday, the board check publishes the number. Ownership color does not flip a pick by itself.
- Operational: Baltimore enters by hand, the save is verified, and the verification is logged before kickoff. This item appears in every Week-4 post until it is done, because it is the one that can silently kill a 3-0 ticket without a game being played.
What Thursday decides
Nothing of ours, and that is the point. Sunday decides the portfolio's shape: Baltimore at Minnesota's joint survival multiplies to roughly 69.5%, the both-die case sits near 3%, and the two one-alive outcomes are the exact middle the two-ticket structure exists to absorb. Two tickets are 3-0 with six wins logged. The fourth week's work — the reads, the fades declined in writing, the tripwires — is all on the record, and tonight the record gets a night off along with the desk.
Enter Baltimore by hand. Verify the save. Bring your own pencil.
