Mike's Pick'em, Week 8 Card: Eleven Favorites and Three Dogs off Moneyline-Against-Curve, Washington −3.5 the Board's Strongest Read at Two and a Half Points Stale, Atlanta +2.5 Taken Into a Market That Won't Price the Game, and Last Week's 10-4 Graded Leg by Leg
Week 3 of 5 in Mike's 5-Week Point Spread Pick'em, all fourteen games against the pool form: the desk's moneyline-against-curve instrument supplies thirteen legs — Washington −3.5 the deepest read at +6.4 with both books already asking −6, the Jets +1.5 the cleanest dog at +5.8, and Atlanta +2.5 an override into Tampa Bay's unpriced quarterback situation, printed as exactly that. Last week's card gets its full grade here: 10-4, the two outright losses named, the judge set 5-3, tiebreak 37 against a final total of 59. Every Week 8 leg grades Monday against the form on this page.
Week 3 of 5 in Mike's pool, and the house owes a grade before it owes a card — that is the standing convention, and last week's 10-4 is graded leg by leg below. The Week 8 form is the one the pool page carried Thursday morning; the card below is priced against Thursday's DraftKings board via ESPN's scoreboard feed, the same instrument the last two cards ran. No owner deviation this week: all fourteen legs are the desk's, and the one override on the card — Atlanta, leg nine — is printed with its reason before kickoff, per the rule the Week 7 autopsy wrote down. Vocabulary lives in moneyline, spread, total, explained.
The card
The reads are no-vig moneyline against the desk's spread curve at the form number — positive read, favorite; negative read, dog. Fourteen games, three of them coin flips at the instrument, one of them with no market at all. The form lines are the pool's, fixed for the week.
| # | Game | Form line | Our pick | The read |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Carolina at Green Bay (Thu) | GB −3.5 | Green Bay −3.5 | no read at the instrument (60.4 against a 60.5 curve); the second venue reads +3.4 and the loop's own number tonight is 65.0 — the favorite on every other instrument, and it plays tonight |
| 2 | Baltimore at Buffalo | BUF −3.5 | Buffalo −3.5 | no read (60.4 against 60.5); the second venue reads +2.4, and Lamar practicing is news the market already paid for |
| 3 | Tennessee at Cincinnati | CIN −10.5 | Cincinnati −10.5 | no read at −0.5, the second venue +2.1; double-digit chalk, the known tilt wearing a bigger costume |
| 4 | Arizona at Dallas | DAL −6.5 | Dallas −6.5 | +4.4 |
| 5 | Minnesota at Detroit | DET −2.5 | Detroit −2.5 | +3.9; the book asks −3 to −3.5, the form is a half-to-point cheap |
| 6 | Indianapolis at Jacksonville | JAC −9.5 | Jacksonville −9.5 | +1.4; the Second Chance survivor ticket rides the same side |
| 7 | Las Vegas at NY Jets | NYJ +1.5 | NY Jets +1.5 | +5.8, the day's cleanest dog |
| 8 | Cleveland at Pittsburgh | PIT −3.5 | Pittsburgh −3.5 | +2.6 |
| 9 | Atlanta at Tampa Bay | TB −2.5 | Atlanta +2.5 | no market: the book won't price Tampa's quarterback. Override, printed below |
| 10 | LA Chargers at LA Rams | LAR −6.5 | LA Rams −6.5 | +2.0 |
| 11 | Kansas City at Denver | DEN +1.5 | Denver +1.5 | +0.8, the thinnest dog on the card |
| 12 | New England at Miami | MIA +7.5 | New England −7.5 | no read at −0.1, and the second venue points the other way (+4.9 Miami); the instrument of record rules, the split rides in print |
| 13 | Philadelphia at Washington | WAS −3.5 | Washington −3.5 | +6.4, the strongest read on the board; both books ask −6 — the form is two and a half points stale |
| 14 | Chicago at Seattle (Mon) | SEA −2.5 | Seattle −2.5 | +3.5 at the Monday moneyline; the book asks −3 |
Eleven favorites, three dogs. The tilt is known and printed in the confession below.
Leg thirteen, because it is the card's spine. The pool form asks Washington −3.5 against Philadelphia. DraftKings asks −6. So does the local book, in its own dialect. Both market instruments moved two and a half points past the form this week and the form, fixed Wednesday, cannot follow. A stale form number is not a prediction, it is a coupon — the desk takes Washington −3.5 and the read is the deepest on the card at +6.4. Same family as leg five: the book asks Detroit −3 to −3.5 and the form still says −2.5. When the form and the market disagree by this much, the pick is not a team. It is a price.
Leg nine, the override, in full. Atlanta at Tampa Bay is the one game this week with no moneyline at the instrument of record — the book lists the game, refuses the price, and the refusal is about the Buccaneers' quarterback, a story this pool's Week 8 survivor brief already carried. The desk's standing rule for no-read legs is to take the favorite. The rule assumes the form can see the teams. Here the form cannot see the one thing the market is hiding from, so the desk overrides its own default and takes Atlanta +2.5, and prints the override before kickoff rather than after it — the exact discipline the Week 7 autopsy wrote down. If Tampa's starter plays and the form was right, this leg grades a loss the rule book invited.
The coin flips, named. Legs one, two, three and twelve are coin flips at DraftKings — the moneyline and the curve agree within a point, which means the instrument has nothing to say. The desk's convention on a silent instrument is the favorite, with the second venue breaking genuine ties: Green Bay gets there on the second venue and the loop's own 65.0 tonight; Buffalo gets there on the second venue; Cincinnati gets there on the second venue, with the double-digit-chalk caveat attached; New England is the exception that proves the rule — the second venue points at Miami +7.5 and the instrument of record says nothing, so the favorite stands and the disagreement is printed here instead of buried. Four coin flips is a lot for one card. Fourteen-game obligations have those weeks.
Tiebreak, Monday-night total points: the desk enters 46. The market's total for Chicago–Seattle is 46.5. The strategy, printed two weeks running: tiebreak entries cluster on the line and on round numbers, so a no-edge ticket belongs at the center of that cluster — last week the center was 44 or 45, and what went in the box was a 37 that finished fourteen points from the 59 the game delivered. The center cannot win every week. It wins more weeks than a lean does. The desk's number is 46, one under the line, same convention as the 50 on the 50.5 that lost to 40 in Week 6. Owner's box, owner's call, changeable until the card locks.
Last week, graded at last
The Week 7 card went 10-4 against the form, and here is every leg, prices as published on that card:
| # | Our pick | Result | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | New England +2.5 at Chicago | CHI 30-24 | L — the owner deviation, graded first and without varnish |
| 2 | Pittsburgh −3.5 at New Orleans (London) | PIT 16-10 | W |
| 3 | Atlanta +3.5 vs San Francisco | ATL 29-20 | W |
| 4 | Cincinnati +2.5 at Baltimore | CIN 35-13 | W |
| 5 | Tampa Bay +3.5 at Carolina | TB 43-13 | W |
| 6 | Houston −9.5 vs the NY Giants | NYG 27-21 (OT) | L — outright, as a nine-and-a-half-point favorite |
| 7 | Minnesota −6.5 vs Indianapolis | MIN 16-10 | L — by the half-point hook, six where seven was needed |
| 8 | NY Jets −4.5 vs Miami | MIA 28-25 | L — outright, at home |
| 9 | Cleveland −1.5 at Tennessee | CLE 27-24 | W |
| 10 | Denver −4.5 at Arizona | DEN 30-16 | W |
| 11 | Detroit −2.5 vs Green Bay | DET 20-17 | W |
| 12 | LA Rams −4.5 at Las Vegas | LAR 35-21 | W |
| 13 | Seattle −2.5 vs Kansas City | SEA 20-3 | W |
| 14 | Dallas −4.5 at Philadelphia (Mon) | DAL 38-21 | W |
Ten and four, and the losses have names. Houston lost outright to the Giants as a double-digit favorite — the same game that killed the survivor Eliminator, and the owner's HOU/MIN split is the only reason the portfolio has a live ticket at all. The Jets lost outright at home to Miami. Minnesota won by six and needed seven. The two deepest reads on that card — Cincinnati +2.5 at −4.8 and Atlanta +3.5 at −3.3 — both cashed, which is what a read is supposed to do when it is that loud. The judge set, the legs where moneyline and curve disagreed by two points or deeper, went 5-3 after Week 6's 1-5. The upgrade question was already arbitrated last week and the instrument kept its job; 5-3 is a good week, not a new argument. The tiebreak guessed 37, the game landed on 59, and the clustering strategy survives one more bad draw. The pool's own counter reads 14 overall — four from Week 6, ten from Week 7 — which matches this desk's arithmetic exactly.
The confession, carried forward
Nothing about the method changed, and the method's flaws are still its own. It compares two market instruments and therefore cannot beat the market; it finds seams between dialects, and this week it found a double-handful — one game where the form is two and a half points stale, one game with no market to read, four more where the instruments shrug in agreement. The known tilt is still known: moneylines speak in wins while the curve speaks in covers, they diverge hardest on double-digit chalk, and that is why the card carries eleven favorites against three dogs. A fourteen-game obligation needs a decision rule. This one is published, reproducible, and honest about being a tiebreaker rather than an oracle.
The desk's running numbers, for the standing record: 52-57, +13.85u, Brier 0.2353 across 275 graded events, current through Wednesday's ledger. The pick'em vertical keeps its own books and they read 14-14, two weeks in.
