NFL Game Day: Week 3 — Two Tickets, One Swing Game, and a Board That Grades Everything by Midnight

Week 3 game day: the desk's two tickets — Kansas City (85.2%, Silver Bullet) and Buffalo (72.6%, ESPN) — kick at 1:00 PM ET, the Bullet's whole pool rides San Francisco at 4:05, and the full Sunday board decides whether Week 3 was merely survived or genuinely harvested.

Everything this desk has published since Wednesday resolves today. Two tickets, fifteen games, one Monday nighter for the team we don't hold. The card, the kickoff grid, and what each outcome buys — in and out before the 1:00 PM ET window.

The desk's card

TicketPickLineWin %Kickoff
Silver BulletKC @ MIA−11.5~85.21:00 PM ET
ESPN entryBUF vs LAC−7~72.61:00 PM ET
The Bullet's pool (not ours)SF vs ARI−8.5~79.14:05 PM ET

The shape, one last time before it becomes a result: the Bullet holds the safest number on the board that its own pool is barely touching — Kansas City is 7.5% of the pool and 45% of the nation, while 54% of the pool sits on San Francisco at a worse price. The ESPN entry holds Buffalo off the national chalk entirely, a switch that already survived its first test Thursday. If the Chiefs and Bills both win, the portfolio goes 3-for-3 on tickets alive into Week 4 — Classic III's empty chair notwithstanding.

The 1:00 PM ET window

  • Chargers at Bills (−7). Allen (582 yards, five touchdowns, zero picks) against an 0-2 Chargers team the market has been fading since the opener. Receiver depth is the whole worry — DJ Moore's shoulder, Keon Coleman unresolved — priced in at −7.
  • Chiefs at Dolphins (−11.5). Mahomes listed and starting against the league's only roster in open rebuild. The line never moved off its number all week; twelve names on the injury report changed nothing.
  • The rest of the window, graded by what it does to fields: Jets at Lions (−6.5) and Seahawks at Commanders (−6.5) carry the national mid-tier; Carolina at Cleveland is the week's tourist trap nobody here touches; Bengals at Steelers (−3.5), Patriots at Jaguars (−3), Giants over Titans (−3), Texans at Colts (−3) round out the filler.

The 4:05 swing game

49ers (−8.5) against a Cardinals team that has spent September being two different clubs — Week 1 giant-killers, Week 2's 31-7 roadkill. For the country this is a routine chalk afternoon. For the Silver Bullet's pool it is the entire season to date: 94 of 173 entries hold San Francisco, and every one of them is priced at 79%. Arizona winning this game cuts the pool nearly in half and moves the Bullet from one of 173 to one of roughly 80 without kicking a ball. Arizona losing keeps the log-odds honest and the room crowded. Nothing the desk can do about either; that is the point of having made the pick on Wednesday.

The late window and Monday

Ravens at Cowboys from Brazil (−3), Vikings at Buccaneers (MIN −1.5), Saints over Raiders (−3), and Rams at Broncos (−1.5) close the Sunday board at 4:25 and 8:20 — all of it someone else's problem. Philadelphia at Chicago (−4.5) waits until Monday night, 8:15 PM ET, for the 1.5% of the country that likes road favorites on short weeks. Neither desk ticket is involved in any of it.

What today decides

Roughly a 62% chance both tickets live, roughly 4% both die, and the two middle outcomes — one alive, one gone — that the two-ticket structure exists to absorb. Nationally, the field started the day already down an eighth of itself (Thursday's Green Bay pile), and the 1:00 window will cut deeper wherever the mid-tier blinks. The log closes at kickoff. The grading post lands tomorrow and opens with the Kansas City result — good or bad, in the first paragraph, as promised. Bring your own pencil.

Correction, Sept. 28 (evening) — read the whole page, not one column. The pool's full pick history is now visible: the middle column is Week 2, the first column is Week 3. The pool's Week 3 pile was Kansas City — roughly 55–60 of the alive entries, the desk included — with San Francisco held by only about 5–7. The "54% SF" figure this post relied on was the pool's Week 2 history, and this desk's Saturday correction corrected an error into a different error. The pick, the results, and the ticket grades are unaffected; the field-position framing was wrong. Third lesson of the month on this pool page: never read one column.
