Survivor Week 8 Grading: Jacksonville 42, Indianapolis 7 — Both Tickets Survive the Engine's 79.6% Call, the Second Chance Hits 4-0 and the Third Chance Opens 1-0, a Deviation Lives an Hour in the Log and Dies Before the Window, and the Pool Read Prints the Honest Verdict on the 1.20x
Week 8 survivor grading: Jacksonville won 42-7 as the published 79.6% call, and both tickets advance — Second Chance 4-0, Third Chance 1-0, JAX burned on both shelves. The Sunday-morning NE deviation and its reversal are both named, per the pre-commit; both branches survived anyway, NE 24-19 over Miami. The pool reads print at the real denominators: Second Chance rode CIN 51.1% and JAX 31.1%, Third Chance CIN 37.9% and JAX 21.7% — the engine's fade edge was a national-meter artifact, said plainly. Dallas's two and fifteen die in the two pools; Classic III's final four all advance on chalk. Lamar returned and Baltimore got boat-raced 10-36; the save re-prices.
Jacksonville 42, Indianapolis 7. The seat this desk published Thursday at 79.6% no-vig — 80.3% by the PRO•LINE de-vig — won by five touchdowns, and the survivor portfolio wakes Monday at two tickets alive: the Second Chance is 4-0 with Detroit, Kansas City, Minnesota, and Jacksonville burned, and the Third Chance opens 1-0 with Jacksonville burned. One number, two pools, no drama. The drama was Sunday morning, and it gets its paragraph here, exactly as pre-committed before either result existed.
The sequence, named
Thursday's brief put Jacksonville on the Second Chance — the engine's single-ticket call at a 1.20x equity multiple, a fade of Cincinnati's 80.0% and 40.22% of the national field. Sunday at roughly 08:45, the owner directed a deviation: Jacksonville off, New England on, in both pools — a 73.9% seat at a 0.98x breakeven price whose entire case was that the real pools ride Jacksonville harder than Yahoo's meter said. It lived about an hour in the log and never locked. Before the window, the owner reversed: both pools back on Jacksonville, the published card restored. The desk grades the episode on the record: the deviation priced breakeven at best and was abandoned pre-window; the reversal returned the card to the published call; and the football made it moot either way — the Patriots beat Miami 24-19, so both branches of Sunday morning survived. What the hour cost was an entry in the log, not a ticket. The full sequence is printed here because the log predates the result, and the log is the receipt.
The pool reads, at the real denominators
The pre-committed tripwire said the Saturday-and-Sunday grid pulls would grade the call where it counts — inside the rooms we actually sit in — and the number publishes either way. It is material, so it publishes.
Second Chance (pool page): 45 filed, and the room took the chalk: Cincinnati 23 (51.1%), Jacksonville 14 (31.1%), New England 4, the Rams 2, Dallas 2. The counter this morning reads 43 alive of 300 — real, matching the rows: only the two Dallas entries died, on the 30-33 loss at Arizona that also killed the Cowboys' 5.12% of the national meter. Our row carries Detroit, Kansas City, Minnesota, Jacksonville, alive.
Third Chance (pool page), in its debut week: 235 filed of 240 — Cincinnati 89 (37.9%), Jacksonville 51 (21.7%), New England 22, then Green Bay, the Rams, and Dallas at 15 each. The dead: Dallas's 15 and Carolina's 4, the Panthers having lost Thursday night. The counter reads 218 alive, which runs three rows ahead of the adjudicated results — the documented stale-counter family; the rows are the record, and Seattle's four decide tonight on Monday Night Football.
The honest verdict on the 1.20x. The engine's equity multiple was computed against Yahoo's national meter, which read Jacksonville at 16.55% Thursday and 17.18% Sunday. The rooms we sit in read 31.1% and 21.7%. At those denominators the fade's edge compresses toward breakeven — the pool's actual bus was Cincinnati, at 51.1% and 37.9%, and the Bengals won 43-36, so nobody meaningful died in either room anyway. The seat grades right, the stated reason grades incomplete: said in this type, on the Monday after, because the Saturday check that was supposed to price this before kickoff never ran — second straight week, and this week it mattered to the story even though it changed no decision.
And the deviation's premise, tested at the reveal: the Second Chance rode Jacksonville at more than double the national read — premise confirmed there — while the Third Chance's 21.7% sat a breath under the ~22% breakeven the morning math printed. The owner reverted an hour in, so the verdict is trivia. It gets printed anyway. That is the rule.
The rest of the chalk, for the burn boards
The early window cooperated almost everywhere: Buffalo 36-10 Baltimore, Detroit 19-15 Minnesota, Pittsburgh 27-6 Cleveland, Tampa Bay 16-0 Atlanta — the board-hole game, won by the quarterback the market wouldn't price — and Denver 28-24 Kansas City, the week's genuine stunner for anyone holding the Chiefs at anything. The late window held: the Rams 24-9 over the Chargers, New England over Miami. Classic III, down to its final four, watched all four advance on chalk — three on Jacksonville, one on Cincinnati — and our row stays out, dead since Week 6.
Entering Week 9, the shelves read: Second Chance burned Detroit, Kansas City, Minnesota, Jacksonville; Third Chance burned Jacksonville. Cincinnati stays unburned on both shelves at its 80.0, and what remains of the Thanksgiving save on either shelf is Baltimore at Houston, alone — the Jacksonville door closed in both rooms with Thursday's spend, published in advance.
The save, re-priced by a boat race
Lamar Jackson returned Sunday. Baltimore lost 10-36 at Buffalo, its worst loss of the season, and the save's team is now whichever version of the Ravens shows up to practice this week. The market will re-price Baltimore at Houston for Week 12 the way it re-prices everything; the desk's standing rule holds — the save re-prices weekly until it is spent or dead, and no ticket holds Baltimore before Week 12 on this evidence.
For the standing record: the desk is +18.98u since September, 150-140-9, Brier 0.2343 across 299 graded predictions as of Friday's board — the number a stranger can cite, kept current at every publish.
The Week 9 brief lands Wednesday with the engine run, the re-drawn shelves, and the save's new number. Process over outcome — but this week, the outcome also behaved. Bring a pencil.
